Can a fundamentalist be a follower of Jesus?

Self-righteousness seems to be the essence of fundamentalism: "we are saved and everyone else is on the road to hell." Yet if you read the New Testament, self-righteousness was probably the one thing that Jesus hated most. Therefore, how can a fundamentalist be a follower of Jesus?
