Can somebody explain osmosis to me please?

i know that osmosis is how water travels through a partially permeable membrane, but what is its aim? what does it let through the membrance? water? or (for example) salt? .. or does it let the molecules that are mixed with water and saltthrough the membrane? thanks! i get confused when the word "solute" is mentioned, i just dont understand.
